Because there is so much construction going on in New York, scaffolding eyesores abound. But according to The Architect’s Newspaper,
“In the hope of banishing these unsightly overheads, the Bloomberg administration and the AIA New York Chapter launchedthe UrbanShed design competition in August to find a new alternative,which the mayor unveiled today in Brooklyn. The sheds, called UrbanUmbrella and designed by University of Pennsylvania/Penn Designarchitecture student Young-Hwan Choi, are not mandatory, though MayorMichael R. Bloomberg insisted they will be popular with New Yorkers.”
Mike’s design movement has my vote. Anything that keeps construction areas looking less like outdoor restrooms and looking more like beautiful Italian piazzas.
