Color "fitas" in Salvador Brazil. Photo: travelvice.com

We’re just back from Brazil! When I told people we were going there, the general responses were, “that place is Magic!” or “I’ve always wanted to go to Brazil. It’s on my bucket list!.” As you can imagine, we were very curious to see for ourselves what kind of place could illicit such passionate responses. Intinerary: Rio de Janeiro, Foz de Igacu and Salvador (in Bahia). Let me say right now, we were not disappointed. The locals were so welcoming and warm despite our limited Portuguese (can anyone say “obrigada?” – that means thanks if you are speaking as a female, “obrigado” if you are a male).

I knew that the country overall was very religious as more than 73% of Brazilians are Christians. But I did not expect that they would be so spiritual. When people found out that I am a Feng Shui consultant, they didn’t know what it was until I explained it to them. Then the reaction was always, “Oh Feng Schwee! We love that here!” Wow that was a nice surprise. Besides seeing books on Feng Shui on sale at stands, I saw many other signs of spiritual practice – charms, bracelets and other things that are meant to bring good luck to the person and into the home. One thing that was everywhere in Salvador were these bright and colorful ribbons or “fitas” that were from the Bonfim Cathedral. People tied them around their wrists, made them into key chains and it is meant to keep you safe and grant you future wishes or miracles. Sweet.

Another thing I loved was a silver cluster of ornaments that graced many a mercado stand. I didn’t get a chance to find out if it was of spiritual symbolism but in Feng Shui, it’s all about intention. Therefore I can see using this beautiful object in a Feng Shui adjustment.

If all this info has gotten you excited, I have good news for you! Tomorrow is Brazilian Day in New York City! There will be music, food and samba dancers. What more can you ask for? Maybe I’ll bump into you there. Bom dia!
