In its 2026 interior design trend report, Vogue highlights something super interesting to me. They reported a shift toward “lived-in” interiors that feel genuinely loved, rather than homes styled for a photograph, or what I like to describe as magazine-ready. The new home trend for 2026 emphasizes comfort, ease and how a space feels to live in over how it performs online. Finally!

When I read that, of course I smiled. Because that is exactly the energy I bring to every client project. We are not looking for comparison, perfection or Instagram ready. We are looking for YOU. A space that feels lived-in by you, your energy and what lights you up. And sometimes having your home reflect who you are means really taking the time to ponder, dream, imagine and feel into what actually feels good to you. Not what feels good to your neighbor, your mother or even your partner. That is another blog post!

I take this topic very seriously, especially as we inch toward the end of the year. We are all focused on buttoning up this year and fast forwarding into 2026. But I am asking you to pause. January is asking for slowness, even though the world seems determined to tell you otherwise.

Living in Paris has only reinforced this theme for me. January here is quieter. Parisians are naturally built to move slower, not an insult but a compliment from an admiring recovering overworked New Yorker. They take time off after the holidays. There is less urgency to announce what’s next and more space to simply come back into your life without rushing to fix or optimize anything.

From a Feng Shui and seasonal perspective, this makes perfect sense. January is the heart of winter, complete Yin energy. This is not a time to push, force or dramatically reset your life. It is a time to restore your energy, slow your pace and prepare internally before momentum naturally builds again. And to allow that to happen without guilt.

And yet culturally in most countries, January has become the loudest month for self improvement. Fix your body, fix your home, fix your life, preferably all at once. I used to follow that rhythm too, until it kept me locked in a cycle of burnout. No wonder so many people feel depleted before the year even finds its footing.

This is why I’m thrilled and always thrilled to remind you that in Chinese astrology and Feng Shui, the energetic new year does not begin on January 1st. It begins with the Lunar New Year which is a couple of months later and in 2026, it falls on February 17, welcoming the Year of the Horse. So you have more time than you think.

Until then, let’s make January preparation month and also to recover from a long year. Adios 2025 and thank you. Let’s recover before intentional movement. Let’s create a solid foundation before making any next moves.

Instead of asking what you need to accomplish right now, ask what needs easing, editing or clearing. Here are three simple ways to help January become your new, laid-back BFF:

1. Slow down with your home
Choose one small area that feels visually heavy and imagine it clear. Notice if your body exhales at the thought. That is the area to work on. You can gently clear it now and stop the moment you feel calmer. Or wait until January. This is not about finishing. It is about listening to what your body is telling you.

2. Restore before you reorganize
Pick one afternoon or evening this month where you do NOTHING productive on purpose. No fixing, planning or catching up. And I mean it! Rest is an intentional act of preparation, not a reward you earn later.

3. Prepare rather than perform
Instead of setting goals, choose one word that describes how you want to feel in 2026. Calm, spacious, confident, supported? Let January hold that word gently without asking it to do more yet. You, you relax.

If this feels uncomfortable or foreign to you, it is okay. Slowing down is like training a muscle. It needs to be used again and again until muscle memory forms. Do not feel guilty for slowing down. Sometimes you just need permission to slow down. Not because of illness or emergency, but simply because you are allowed to slow down. So my Feng Shui loves, I hereby give you permission.

If you want support preparing for the year ahead before the Lunar New Year, reply and I will share the offerings that can support you. Until then, take it slowly.
