My apartment called me out the other day.

You know that I never lie to you. I do this work because I need it for me. And if you know Human Design, mine literally says, “Susan! You’re here to live it, mess it up, figure it out and then teach it!” So of course I tell you about my life because that’s how all of this started 🙂

Hence, this story: I had a pretty lousy week. And I’m usually the one who refuses to call anything bad because technically it’s all “a lesson,” right? But wow, this one really tested my positive thinking.

It started with a trip to the ER for a stuck ring (not joking, my finger turned blue!) and progressed straight into personal drama that I’ll spare you the details on. Meanwhile, I was finishing up my Vision Board launch and serving clients. So not surprisingly, this took a lot of energy out of me and my apartment reflected it. It was a total disaster.

But this time, something was different.

All the Feng Shui tools that I’ve practiced and shared over the years came out of my tool belt one by one.

  1. I noticed my feelings. They were becoming negative and self-defeating.
  2. Then I cried. Like, hard. Because sometimes that’s the only way the energy gets out. It was important to feel what was in my body and release it. That’s a strong energetic charge that had been blocked. Crying let that energy flow again.
  3. I gently allowed myself (and yes I use the word allowed since I’m a high achiever who has a hard time slowing down) to shift from my daily Yang mode of doing, doing, doing to Yin mode. Yin is the opposite of yang – slowing down, resting, receiving. Here’s what that looked like for me: putting on comfy clothes, making tea and getting into bed.

Here’s the most important part: I didn’t do those Yin things mindlessly. I did them very, very intentionally. I recognized what was going on, and because I know my Chinese astrology and Human Design inside out, I knew this was exactly what I needed. No guilt and absolutely NO apologies. My energy tank was dangerously low and this is what needed to happen. (Watch this YouTube video about keeping your energy tank full.)

But right before I got into bed, I took five minutes to tidy my apartment. Because remember, that was part of the signal to me that something was off balance in my life. I always feel better when things are tidy, and it didn’t fail this time. I just tidied up very slowly and intentionally, only tidying the things that I really knew would annoy me if they stayed strewn across my couch.

I always teach that Feng Shui is all about intention. It’s where we start, to guide the energy to our goals. It’s the simplest trick!

So I’m writing this from bed and I’m still tired, but better. That’s the beauty of slowing down. Sometimes rest is the most productive thing you can do. It’s not glamorous, but super powerful.

So here’s my invitation: take a few quiet minutes this weekend and walk through your space. Notice what catches your attention. The pile of clothes you keep meaning to put away. The corner that feels a little heavy. The spot that instantly makes you smile. Or maybe it’s not your space at all. Maybe it’s an argument you had or a text that’s still sitting unanswered. That’s part of your environment too. And then, listen.

Your space is always talking to you. It tells the truth about where your energy is and what it needs. You don’t have to fix anything. Just notice as awareness alone starts to shift the Chi.
