Do you have a hard time letting go of things?
Maybe your home is filled with items that you don’t necessarily love but have sentimental value, or you tell yourself you’ll fix them or use them someday. I’m here to tell you: that stuff is blocking you from what you really want.
Your home is constantly reflecting what you’re holding onto – physically, emotionally, and yes, sometimes a little too literally (hello ex’s sweatshirt “just in case” you need an extra layer). If life feels stuck, take a look around. What’s hanging out in your space that’s no longer part of your story?
I had a client, let’s call her Dana. On the outside, Dana was successful, fun, and seemed to have everything put together. Anyone who looked at her would think, “That woman has got her s** together.”
But when we started working together, I quickly realized that her space was telling a reallllllly different story. Her closet was bursting with clothes she hadn’t worn in years, gifts from past relationships, and even toys from a pet who died many years ago.
Despite her success, Dana was carrying around energy from the past that wasn’t serving her. Once she started clearing out the clutter that no longer reflected who she was becoming, things started to shift – new opportunities appeared, and she felt more aligned with her true self.
If you’re ready to break up with stagnant energy and create room for what’s next, here are 3 Feng Shui-approved ways to gracefully let go of things and make space for what you really want in your life:
1. Set an Intention Before You Declutter
Before you go full Marie Kondo on your life, pause and ask yourself: What am I making space for? Whether it’s more love, creativity, or adventure, decluttering with purpose is a game changer. It’s not just cleaning – it’s TRANSFORMATION. Plus, you get to be intentional – way more empowering than “spring cleaning” on autopilot.
2. Thank It, Then Let It Go
It’s easy to hold onto things because they have sentimental value, or you think you’ll use them someday (I’m looking at you, broken toaster). But if you’re struggling to part with something, try this: Hold it, acknowledge what it represented in your life, thank it, and release it. It’s like breaking up with grace – “You were great in that phase, but I’m ready for something new.”
3. Infuse Fresh Energy into the Space
Once you’ve cleared out the old, fill it with something that you consider lovely. Bring in something fresh – flowers, a new piece of art, or even just nothing (because spaciousness is powerful, too). Open the windows, light a candle, and let the new energy flow in.
Your space should support the person you’re becoming, not just reflect who you were. So, what’s one thing you know it’s time to release? Drop it in the comments – I’ll cheer you on.
