Today is the first day of Spring and its energy jettisons us into action!
In Feng Shui, Spring symbolizes new beginnings, jumpstart of projects and for most people, it often symbolizes Spring cleaning.
With the advent of “Marie Kondo’s, The Art of Tidying Up” phenomenon or TAOTU for short, people all around the world are decluttering their homes. For better or for worse.
Why worse?
Decluttering is usually viewed as a positive thing as it can help move stagnant energy, release old ties so that new things can come into your life. All good.
But many people may jump right in and not be prepared.
Decluttering your home (and life) can bring about big change as well as unexpected emotions and reactions. When not done with intention or preparation, trying to declutter could potentially have some disappointing and unwelcome results. Not to discourage you, but it’s very important to prepare yourself before, during and after your “Clutter Cleanse.”
Here are some Feng Shui tips to “TAOTU-ing” your space:
- Set your intention and expectations – Why are you decluttering? Do you want to create a space for an office or for yoga? Do you want to have less stuff so you feel more peace? It’s important your know your personal WHY before you start so you can guide your energy in the direction you want. Your power lies in your intention.
- Time Block – Choose a day that you know you will have uninterrupted time. I would suggest 3 hour blocks, broken down into 45 minute decluttering sessions with 15 minute breaks in between. Have a timer on hand to stay on track.
- Create a plan of action – To start, TAOTU encourages you to empty out every. piece. of. clothing. you own. onto. your. bed. (deep breath)So planning ahead would be good unless you want to be sleeping on the floor or on a pile of clothes 🙂 Be sure you know where you will be donating your piles when your done so they don’t get sucked back in. Map out what you want to accomplish in the time you blocked off. It’s important to break down your goal into manageable bits so you don’t run out of steam.
- Be Kind with Yourself – Make sure you are well-rested, have healthy snacks on hand and stay hydrated throughout the process. It’s easy to get swept up in the decluttering frenzy and that is the easiest and fastest way to burn out and give up mid process.
- Celebrate – When that last timer goes off, celebrate! I don’t care if you just tackled the sock drawer, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you did the first 4 steps above and got to this point. Celebrate all wins and bring that energy back into all parts of your life.
Congratulations. You have TAOTO-ed the Feng Shui Creative way!
Your turn!
