I love this time of year – hanging pretty lights, playing holiday music and any excuse to eat gingerbread, I’ll take it.
While the festive superficial bling is fun and endearing, what I really cherish is what’s underneath.
Yup, that’s right, what’s underneath.
And it’s not always pretty that’s for sure. Especially this time of year.
Festivities can bring up alot of mixed feelings and emotions.
Overwhelm, fatigue, the oh so familiar, “I-can’t-get-myself-off-the-couch-to-do-anything” feeling.
But being the optimist and activist that I am, I feel that this is the perfect time of year to face your “stuff” underneath and really see how things are working (or not) in your life.
Looking at and preparing your inner home especially as the year finishes out, will definitely help smoothly transition into the new year.
This time of year, we are mostly thinking about others – buying presents and making sure that everyone is having fun at holiday parties. Although it’s not the usual thing to do, it may be time to look at what else is underneath that holiday cheer.
We usually max ourselves out through the end of the year, then wonder why we feel so anxiety-ridden and exhausted come Dec 31 when – gasp – it’s time to redirect our energy to ourselves and ponder our new year’s resolutions.
Anyone feeling the New Year’s jitters yet?
Be strategic this year. Get in the right mental and emotional state now so that you’re prepared for what’s already happening and for what’s to come in the next several weeks.
Set the mood in your external and internal homes:
1. Clear for Clarity. How can you look underneath if you don’t know even where to start? Consciously go through your space and say goodbye all those things that have snuck their way into your home. Millions of chopsticks you’ll never use. Those pants you still don’t fit into. They’ve got to go. The area I want you to focus on the MOST is your Knowledge / Self Cultivation area. Make sure that section is open and airy so that you are ready for the year of full clarity that’s coming ahead.
2. Call In For Backup. Some gnarly things might be waiting for you underneath the surface so make sure that you have stellar backup. Create a steady and flourishing support system by adorning your Helpful People section with healthy plants and flowers. Nothing says strength like upward growth.
3. Make Like Water and Flow. I know TLC tells you not to go chasing waterfalls. So don’t. But I do suggest getting yourself a small water fountain or artwork with water images to remind yourself to go with the flow. Let it remind you that you are fluid and flexible and that you will be able to handle whatever you find underneath. That type of self patience and kindness is the key to making it through whatever crawls out from below the surface.
Roll up your sleeves and get started now. Throw things out. Get scared then keep plowing through. No better time to start making room for what’s to come in the new year than now. Don’t hide. Face your Gremlins (those pesky guys that keep you on the couch) full-on, so you can prepare for a new year and new beginnings.
